Beautiful Spirit

Beautiful Spirit

Mark tells us a striking story about Jesus on His way from Bethany:
“12 The next day, when they had come out from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 Seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came to see if perhaps he might find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 Jesus told it, ‘May no one ever eat fruit from you again!’ and his disciples heard it.” – Mark 11:12–14
At first glance, this moment can feel surprising. Why would Jesus respond so strongly to a tree? But when we slow down and sit with the story, we begin to see the deeper message He was teaching His disciples — and us.
Most women care about their appearance. We want to look put‑together, lovely, healthy, and confident. And the world certainly gives us plenty of ways to chase that — products, gym memberships, clothes, cosmetics, and endless advice on how to “look our best.” There’s nothing wrong with caring for ourselves, but if we’re honest, we don’t always put the same energy into our spiritual appearance.
That fig tree looked good from a distance. Full leaves. Healthy branches. It gave the impression of fruitfulness. But when Jesus came close, He found nothing but leaves. No fruit. No substance. It was all appearance.
And that’s the heart of the lesson.
Jesus wasn’t angry at a tree — He was teaching His disciples that God is not pleased with a life that looks godly on the outside but bears no fruit on the inside. Hypocrisy is when someone appears spiritual, kind, or righteous, but when their true nature is revealed, there is nothing there. No love. No humility. No obedience. No fruit.
As godly women, we don’t want to live leaf‑only lives. We want the Holy Spirit to shape us from the inside out so that when Jesus looks into our hearts, He sees something real — something growing — something that reflects Him.
Paul tells us exactly what that fruit looks like:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” – Galatians 5:22–23
This is the beauty that matters most. This is the kind of “appearance” that pleases God — not the kind we buy, apply, or dress up, but the kind that grows from a surrendered heart.
So today, instead of asking, “How do I look?” maybe we ask, “Lord, what fruit are You growing in me?”
And then we invite Him to keep shaping us — pruning, strengthening, and nurturing us — so that our lives bear the kind of fruit that brings Him glory.
We should seek Christ daily to help the fruit of God’s Spirit manifest in our lives. Because when the Holy Spirit makes us beautiful, that beauty never fades.
